木 · Wood
Wood is growth and the will to expand — planning season, beginnings, the push upward before the ground is ready. Traditionally associated with a tendency to move first and check later.
Green, and the greens of new growth.
Living wood, bamboo, paper, woven plant fibre.
Read as difficulty starting, or difficulty staying flexible once started.
火 · Fire
Fire is warmth, visibility and expression — being seen, and the risk of burning bright enough to forget to rest. It is the element most associated with charisma and with exhaustion.
Red, and the vermilion used in seals and talismans.
Candle and flame, red pigment, light itself.
Read as difficulty being noticed, or a coldness in presentation that is not felt inside.
土 · Earth
Earth is stability, digestion and holding things together — and the element that sits between the seasons, steading the other four. Traditionally associated with reliability, and with carrying more than is yours to carry.
Yellow, ochre, and the muted tones of fired clay.
Unglazed ceramic, stone, jade, earth pigments.
Read as difficulty settling — restlessness, and a sense of never quite being landed.
金 · Metal
Metal is structure, discernment and letting go — standards, precision, and the discipline to cut what no longer fits. It is the element of the boundary, which is why it carries the protection reading as well as the metalworking one.
White, silver and the pale metals.
Silver, gold, bronze, and cut or faceted forms.
Read as difficulty saying no, and difficulty letting go of what has already ended.
水 · Water
Water is depth, adaptability and reflection — wisdom and flow, and a tendency to keep things below the surface. In the classical reading it is also the element associated with wealth, because wealth was understood as circulation rather than storage.
Black, deep blue and the dark greys of deep water.
Still water, dark glass, obsidian, ink.
Read as difficulty resting and difficulty reflecting — motion without depth.
