Protection

For steadiness under pressure, and for boundaries that hold when someone leans on them. This is the oldest of the four intentions, in both traditions.

Two readings

What is being guarded, and from what.

Western

Protective work in the Western tradition attaches to the fourth house — home, roots, the place you retreat to — and the twelfth, which covers what is hidden or dissolving. Mars supplies the force to hold a line; Saturn supplies the wall that stays up. Rising-sign work is often read as the outer boundary you present.

Chinese

The tradition separates 辟邪 — warding off what should not enter — from 护身, keeping the self intact. Both are read as questions of Metal, the element of the blade and the boundary, and of Earth, which absorbs impact rather than deflecting it. Placement matters as much as the object: what sits at the entrance is not the same as what sits on the body.

Traditionally associated

What the traditions reach for.

The historical object-list here is unusually specific, and almost all of it is about materials believed to be inherently hostile to what you are warding off.

Cinnabar red

朱砂 — the vermilion mineral, long used in Daoist talismans and seals. Its association runs through protection rather than decoration, which is why seals are stamped in it.

Peach wood and gourd

桃木 is the traditional wood for warding; the gourd 葫芦 is read as catching and containing what should not reach you.

Knots and closed forms

Knotted cord, bound thread, sealed vessels. The logic is containment — a thing tied shut is a thing that does not leak.

Read this honestly — an object is not a security system. It does not stop anything from happening, and it is not a substitute for professional advice. What it can do is hold a decision in place: the moment you touch it is the moment you remember you meant to hold that boundary.

Find the one that matches you

Protection is usually read from what is missing.

In practice, people come to this intention when a chart is thin in Metal or Earth — the two elements that supply structure and the capacity to absorb. That is a specific, checkable thing rather than a feeling, and the free tool will tell you.
